In 1950s London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock and his sister Cyril create garments for members of high society. When Reynolds takes a trip to a restaurant, he is immediately smitten by his waitress Alma and asks her to come away with him. She acts as his muse and eventual love interest, living in his home. At first, she is delighted to be surrounded by his famous clients and to see his creative process at work. Eventually, he becomes put out by her habits and requests for autonomy until he falls gravely ill from poisonous mushrooms that Alma feeds him to get revenge. When he is helpless in bed, she nurses him back to health and he becomes convinced that they should wed. The two are married in a simple ceremony and their differences in lifestyle immediately come to a head again—she wants to go out dancing for New Year's Eve and he wants to stay in working. She leaves on her own to go to a party and he tracks her down, dragging her back to their estate. Alma poisons him again but this time, she informs him that he will fall ill and she will be there to help him as he's helpless while he is in the middle of eating a mushroom omelette. He loves the idea and kisses her. Several months later, the couple have a child together and Alma has taken a more active role in Reynolds' dressmaking.
