Plot  In 1950s London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock and his sister Cyril create garments for members of high society. When Reynolds takes a trip to a restaurant, he is immediately smitten by his waitress Alma and asks her to come away with him. She acts as his muse and eventual love interest, living in his home. At first, she is delighted to be surrounded by his famous clients and to see his creative process at work. Eventually, he becomes put out by her habits and requests for autonomy until he falls gravely ill from poisonous mushrooms that Alma feeds him to get revenge. When he is helpless in bed, she nurses him back to health and he becomes convinced that they should wed. The two are married in a simple ceremony and their differences in lifestyle immediately come to a head again—she wants to go out dancing for New Year's Eve and he wants to stay in working.
