Plot  In the final days of the Italian Campaign of World War II, Hana, a French-Canadian nurse working and living in a bombed Italian monastery, looks after the English patient, a critically burned man without a name who speaks English. She begins a romance with Kip, a Sikh sapper in the British Army who defuses bombs, despite her worries that she is a "curse" on those close to her.

They are joined by David Caravaggio, a morphine-addicted Canadian Intelligence Corps operative who is there to disarm the partisans. He questions the patient, who tells them about his past as Hungarian cartographer Count László de Almásy. In the late 1930s, he was mapping the Sahara as part of a Royal Geographical Society archeological and surveying expedition in Egypt and Libya with Englishman Peter Madox and others. Their expedition is joined by a British couple, Geoffrey and Katharine Clifton. Katharine and Almásy have an affair which founders on his jealousy and her guilt. The explorers find and docu...
